New Delhi: Accusing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Delhi Police of negligence in her son’s missing case, Fatima Nafis, the mother of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing in 2016, said she will even approach the Supreme Court.

Taking to social media platform X, Nafis on Tuesday asserted that she will fight till her last breath for her son, after a Delhi Court on Monday accepted a closure report prepared by CBI in Ahmed’s missing case.

Najeeb Ahmed, a first year student at the JNU, went missing back in October 15, 2016, when he was 27 years old. The student reportedly went missing from his hostel a day after an alleged scuffle with some members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The court on Monday accepted a closure report filed by CBI, citing lack of evidences to prove the case’s link with the alleged suspects. The court was hearing Ahmed’s mother Nafis’s protest petition against the CBI closure report, which was filed in 2018. The mother alleged that the central probe agency had not conducted a proper investigation into the possible role of the at least nine suspects in the case. The CBI told the court that they scrutinised the call details and records of the suspects, and found no link to Ahmed’s disappearance. The court, while accepting CBI’s closure report noted that the agency “exhausted all options.”

In her post after the case closure verdict, Ahmed’s mother said, the negligence with which the Delhi Police and CBI worked from the first day has led to the court accepting the CBI’s closure report, lamenting that it has been over 9 years since her son disappeared. She alleged neither the Delhi Police nor the CBI has been able to arrest those students associated with ABVP, nor take any action against the goons who assaulted her son and then made him disappear.

In her social media post today, Ahmed’s mother lamented that large investigative agencies and the entire judicial system was not able to tell where her son is till today.

“For years, rumors were spread about my son, lies were propagated. Which, following the order of the Delhi High Court, were removed from all digital platforms and social media platforms, but the truth is that such large investigative agencies and the entire judicial system have not been able to tell till today where my Najeeb is,” Nafis wailed.

She then pointed out that even when the system tried to silence her, students from across the country, including JNU, AMU JAMIA and other colleges, stood by her, facing lathies on the streets, while raising their voices for her son.

Noting that this support and fight give her courage, Nafis stated that many times she wonders how she can give up hope. “How can I let this courage break? He is my son. I want my son. If for this I have to go to every court in the country — I will go. I will fight until my last breath,” Ahmed’s mother affirmed.

She further expressed her hope that more people will join her fight in the coming days, emphasising that the fight was not just for her son, but for every mother who seeks justice for her child.

“If I have to go to the country’s highest court for this, I will go there too,” the wailing mother of Ahmed concluded her post.
