A 19-year-old from Telangana and a 21-year-old from Gujarat were arrested for sending multiple threat mails to Reliance Industries chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani. They were arrested on Saturday by Gamdevi police in Mumbai. The police have identified the accused from Telangana as Ganesh Ramesh Vanpardhi.
The accused had sent five emails to Ambani demanding money and threatening to kill him last week, the police said.
The email demanded a ransom of Rs 400 crore and conveyed serious consequences if the demand was not met. The police have reported that Vanpardh will be placed in the custody until November 8.
Initially, a mail was sent demanding Rs 20 crore, then later it was increased to Rs 400 crore. The VPN address used to send the mail traced back to Belgium.
A senior Mumbai Police officer has said that they are interrogating the accused and he had been remanded to police custody. Primarily, they said that it looks like a mischief. He also added that they are questioning to know more details about the emails and networks used by the accused.
The first email was allegedly received on October 27 from a single email id which was followed by Saturday and Monday. In one of the mails sent, the accused threatened that Ambani will be shot dead if he does not pay the demanded amount.
In response to the incident, Mumbai police has increased security measures around Ambani’s residence, Antilia, located on Atlamount Road, Mumbai.
Mukesh Ambani is provided with Z+ security with a detail of 55 personnel including more than 10NSG commandos and police officers. In 2022, the union home ministry had upgraded Mukesh Ambani’s security from Z to Z+ category following intelligence inputs about a threat.
Z+ security is the highest level of protection provided in India. It includes a 55-security team with armed commandos from the National Security Guard. All commandos are fully trained in unarmed combat and martial arts.
