Odisha Government Revises Salaries Of Junior Primary Teachers By Nearly 45%

Naveen Patnaik government hiked the salary of junior teachers again in primary and upper primary schools across the state who have worked for 3 years in contractual positions. The hike will be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2023.

According to the announcement released by the CM office, the teachers will get a salary hike from its present Rs 13,800. The regular teachers will receive an increment of around 45 percent by Rs 6,800 which makes the salary Rs 20,000 per month. As per the information, this hike will cost the state exchequer an additional Rs 95 crore per annum. The salary hike expects to benefit around 12, 784 junior teachers in the state.


Reportedly, primary school teachers have been persistently campaigning for salary revisions, staging protests to draw the government’s attention. Recently, on March 9, 2024, the Odisha government revised the pay structure of primary school teachers, which will benefit around over one lakh teachers and other educational officers. The pay revision will put an additional pressure of Rs 587 crore on the state exchequer annually.

Earlier, in January 2022, the Odisha government increased the junior teachers’ salaries by 50% following the 7th Pay Commission Recommendations. The last hike provisions were applicable for both the contractual and regular teachers which caused an additional cost of Rs 168 crore per annum to the government exchequer.

A day before, the Odisha government also hiked the remuneration and other benefits of Panchayati Raj representatives in the state. The salary of Sarpanch has increased by Rs 6,650 and Naib Sarpanchs will get an additional Rs 3510.  Sarpanchs, Naib Sarpanchs, and ward members now receive a daily allowance and sitting fees of Rs 480 instead of Rs 240. In a similar vein, the president of Zilla Parishad would now receive a monthly salary of Rs 30,000 instead of the previous Rs 9,380. In addition, their sitting fees and daily allowance have been increased from Rs 300 to Rs 600.

The decision of salary hikes for teachers carries significant importance ahead of elections, considering active involvement in public interactions.
