Congress To Declare Kerala Chief Minister's Name Today

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Congress High Command from Delhi will declare the new chief minister of Kerala today, May 14, following over a week of power struggle among the top claimants for the position. On Wednesday, the Congress general secretary in charge of communication Jairam Ramesh had stated that the party has decided the name and would declare on Thursday.

Since the Congress-led United Democratic Alliance (UDF) made a spectacular performance securing 102 seats of the total 140 during the Kerala Assembly Elections 2026, there is a deadlock in the Congress party over the choice of the upcoming chief minister in the state.

Among the potential names, KC Veenugopal, VD Satheeshan and Ramesh Chennithala has emerged as the key three contenders in the race. While KC Venugopal boasts about heading the party at the national front, Ramesh Chennithala is the senior most leader in the party. KC has reportedly garnered the support of more MLAs.

Notably, VD Satheesan, the leader of Opposition in the second LDF term has emerged as a powerful claimant due to his growing popularity among young legislators and party workers. Representing the Paravur Assembly constituency since 2001, Satheesan is known for his aggressive speeches inside the Assembly and his strong opposition role against the LDF government during the previous term.
