“People will decide”, said Chandy Oommen when asked about the Puthuppally by-election results. Mr Oommen, son of the late veteran Kerala Congress leader Oommen Chandy, was talking to Timeline on the sidelines of a private function on Sunday.
Mr Oommen is the UDF (United Democratic Front) candidate in the upcoming by-polls in Puthuppally, a legislative assembly constituency in Kerala”s Kottayam. His father, former Kerala Chief Minister and MLA, Oommen Chandy was dominating the constituency for past 53 years.
Oommen Chandy is a “more luminous sun even at the dusk”, said Chandy Oommen when asked about his father.
The senior died on July 18 2023, and was representing the Puthuppally constituency as an MLA in the State Assembly from 1970 until his death in 2023, making him the longest-serving member of the Kerala Legislature Assembly.

The junior submitted his nomination on 17 August. The by-election is scheduled on 5 September 2023. Mr Ommen, as well as the party he is affiliated to, is expecting a record victory in Puthuppally.
Ever since the death of his father, it was clear that Kerala Congress did not waste time to name the junior as the by-poll candidate. Congress is using the popularity of the late chief minister and are expecting a comfortable win.
The 37 year old Chandy Oommen has been a part of Congress from his college days. He currently serves as the chairman of the Youth Congress” national outreach cell and is s member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).
