Govindachamy Caught: Fugitive Rapist Nabbed After Prison Break
Notorious convict Govindachamy, who escaped earlier today from the high-security Kannur Central Jail, has reportedly been recaptured, according to emerging reports. His brief time as a fugitive sparked a massive statewide manhunt and ignited widespread outrage over a serious breach in prison security.
Govindachamy, a life-term convict in the infamous Soumya rape and murder case, was allegedly caught in the Kannur city area just hours after his escape.
While officials have yet to release an official confirmation, reports say he was apprehended following intense tracking efforts that included surveillance footage analysis and coordinated ground searches.
Earlier this morning, panic spread after jail authorities discovered during a routine cell check that Govindachamy was missing. As a high-risk inmate, his disappearance from a heavily guarded, monitored cell prompted urgent questions about negligence and possible complicity within the prison system.

The Soumya case, which dates back to 2011, had shaken the nation. Govindachamy had been convicted of brutally assaulting the 23-year-old woman after pushing her off a moving train. While the Supreme Court later overturned the murder conviction and upheld life imprisonment for rape, his crime remains one of the most shocking in recent Indian criminal history.
His sudden escape triggered a statewide alert, with security heightened at railway stations, bus depots, and border checkpoints. Top officials, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police, rushed to Kannur Central Jail to supervise both the search operation and the internal inquiry into how the escape occurred.
