Since the Kerala government revealed the much-awaited Hema Committee Report on August 19 at 2:30 PM, social media has witnessed an outpour of reactions and responses from celebrities across all platforms. The Committee released 233 pages of the report, excluding sections that could infringe on the privacy of the individuals mentioned in it.

Following the report, veteran actor Revathi stated that she had been waiting for the report to be released, and now it is time to begin the real actions. She wrote under an Instagram post that it has been marked as a historic moment that the 233-page HEMA Committee Report was released by the Kerala Govt after 5 years of several hurdles including court stays, impleading and hours and hours of discussion within WCC (Women In Cinema Collective). She extended her gratitude to people who truly construe the meaning of the report and said that she with her female co-workers may continue to strive for the betterment of the film industry henceforth.

Saji Cheriyaan, Minister for Fisheries, Culture & Youth Affairs stated that the government see the Malayalam film Industry mayhem as same as they see common issues happening in society. The Pinarayi government is capable of apprehending the depth of the issues and would take action as they ponder on women’s safety firsthand, he added.

Veteran actor Siddiq said that he is not sure about what to say as he currently attends the rehearsal of an upcoming  A.M.M.A. show in Ernakulam. “Being the A.M.M.A general secretary I will look into the report and study thoroughly before I utter something in front of the media,” he added.

On the contrary, actor Shine Tom Chacko opposed the report saying that he didn’t witness any wrongdoings in the industry and hadn’t gone through any such incidents working in the Malayalam movie industry. Inequality happens everywhere and it is not only against women but men are also the victims of such things, he added.

The Hema Committee was established by the Kerala Government in 2017 in response to a petition filed by the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), to investigate the challenges faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. The report was submitted on December 31, 2019. The State Information Commission (SIC) subsequently approved a plea under the Right to Information Act (RTI Act) to publicly release portions of the report, provided that personal information was redacted.
