Pregnant Woman With Infant Slapped By Police In Ernakulam; CM Orders Urgent Action

Kochi, Kerala: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan ordered the Director General of Police (DGP) to take urgent action against the police officer who allegedly slapped a pregnant woman holding her three-month-old infant inside Ernakulam police station.

The chief minister intervened after the 33-second CCTV clip, which showed Circle Inspector Prathap Chandran K. G, slapping the pregnant woman, Shymol N J, while she held her infant, went viral on social media. The incident reportedly occurred in 2024, and the video surfaced after public pressure.

After the chief minister’s order following widespread public outrage, the DGP sought an immediate report from the Additional Director General Police (ADGP) in charge of Law and Order, indicating imminent disciplinary proceedings against the accused officer.

Sharing the video of the incident, Leader of Opposition in Kerala VD Satheeshan lamented noting shocking instance of police brutality. “Is this the much-touted promise of women’s safety?” the Congress leader wrote on his X handle while sharing the footage.
