A day after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated Barabanki MP Upendra Singh Rawat from the same seat, a fake obscene video of the candidate circulated on social media on Sunday, reports NDTV.

An FIR has been lodged by the MP’s personal secretary Dinesh Rawat against the unidentified elements with the city Kowali police of Barabanki on Saturday. In the complaint, it is alleged that some opponents were trying to malign the image of the MP by circulating his fake and obscene video.

Dinesh Rawat claimed that mischievous elements using editing techniques had morphed the video. However, the complainant has not raised suspicion on any individual but stated that they suspect the involvement of the MP’s political rivals behind the act.

The MP said that as soon as “I got the party’s ticket from Barabanki, my opponents did the act”. Barabanki additional superintendent of police (ASP) CN Sinha said that they were keeping a vigil on social media to track down the source of the alleged fake video and people involved in the act. The police added that FIRs under different IPC sections for maligning the images will be registered for maligning the image of the MP by misusing the social media platform. He said that the police will soon trace the culprit behind the heinous act and will take stern action.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, then-sitting MP of the BJP Priyanka Singh Rawat was denied ticket and made Upendra Singh Rawat its candidate.

The Bharatiya Janata Party released the first list of candidates on Saturday. The first list comprises 195 names. The list includes the names of the Prime minister, 34 union ministers, and ministers of state.

PM Modi will contest the election from his stronghold, Varanasi, and Union minister Amit Shah is fielded in Gandhinagar.
