Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday confirmed that the blast at Rameshwaram Cafe was triggered by a low-intensity improvised explosive device. This confirmation followed shortly after the explosion rocked the popular cafe in the heart of Bengaluru, sending shockwaves through the IT capital of India. Siddaramaiah further revealed that the explosive device was kept inside a customer”s bag.
Nine people were injured in the blast at the popular café in Bengaluru”s Kundalahalli. The blast was seen on CCTV. The injured people are being treated at Brookfield Hospital. They are out of danger, Karnataka Police chief Alok Mohan informed.
“There”s information that around 12.30 pm, there was an explosion. And that there was a bag. We are examining the CCTV footage. It was an explosive blast. We don”t know who has done it. The police are at the spot. I have asked the home minister to review the situation,” Siddaramaiah said.
The Rameshwaram Cafe tends to be crowded during lunch hours. Initially, there was speculation of a cylinder blast, but the cafe”s founder claimed that the explosion was caused by a bag left by a customer. Divya Raghavendra Rao, the co-founder and managing director of the cafe chain, said that there were two explosions within a span of 10 seconds.
In a post on X, BJP”s Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya said he spoke to the cafe owner about what could have caused the explosion and demanded a response from the Karnataka CM.
“Just spoke to Rameshwaram Cafe founder Sri Nagaraj about the blast in his restaurant. He informed me that the blast occurred because of a bag that was left by a customer and not any cylinder explosion. One of their employees is injured. It seems to be a clear case of bomb blast. Bengaluru demands clear answers from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah,” Surya said.
The CM clarified that the explosion was caused by an improvised device rather than a high explosive. Siddaramaiah emphasised the need to refrain from politicising the situation, highlighting that the last blast in Karnataka occurred in Mangaluru during BJP”s tenure.
Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara assured said that all angles will be probed. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will visit the explosion site. Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Mohan stated that they are awaiting the forensics report, and the investigation is currently in progress.
