Edited by Akhil Thomas

The BJP has replaced six of its seven sitting MPs in Delhi for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. By banking on six new faces, the saffron party is making efforts to secure all seven seats in the national capital. BJP leader Yogendra Chandolia is the party candidate from the North West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.

The BJP decided to field Yogendra Chandolia as they have denied ticket for sitting MP and celebrity-turned-politician Hans Raj Hans. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Punjabi Sufi Hans Raj Hans won the North West Delhi constituency by a margin of 5,53,897 votes. While Hans Raj Hans secured 8,48,663 votes, AAP’s Gugan Singh stood second with a total of 2,94,766 votes.

Yogendra Chandolia, who is currently serving as the general secretary of the BJP’s Delhi unit, was the former mayor of the erstwhile North Delhi Municipal Corporation. The BJP leader has been associated with the party since the 1990s and has been active in politics since his student days. In 2014, Yogender Chandolia became the mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.

The veteran leader is a Delhi University graduate and also a prominent Dalit face of the BJP in the national capital. Yogendra Chandolia also served as the municipal councilor from the Dev Nagar area. In 2023, he was appointed as the general secretary of the BJP’s Delhi unit. This is the first Lok Sabha battle for Yogendra Chandolia. However, he had contested the Delhi Assembly elections twice. In the 2015 and 2020 assembly polls, Yogendra Chandolia contested from the Karol Bagh constituency but lost to AAP’s Vishesh Ravi both times.
