The BJP has announced the list of candidates for 11 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. The BJP has continued the trend of fielding a woman candidate from the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency. Bijuli Kalita Medhi is the BJP candidate in Guwahati, which is one of the notable constituencies in the state. This is an unexpected move by the BJP, as sitting MP Queen Oja has also lost her candidature.
Bijuli Kalita Medhi, who joined the party in 2013, is currently serving as the vice president of the Assam BJP. She was the former president of Mahila Morcha, the women”s wing of the BJP, in the state. In 2016, the BJP took control of Guwahati Municipal Corporation for the first time in the history of the civic body as party leaders Mrigen Sarania and Bijuli Kalita Medhi got elected unopposed as Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively.
Bijuli Kalita Medhi reportedly entered politics after resigning from the role of a teacher. The BJP leader has a strong educational background from institutions such as Gauhati University and Handique Girl’s College.
The BJP leader also thanked the top party leadership shortly after the party announced her as the candidate. “I thank the party leadership including respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for giving me this opportunity,” said Bijuli Kalita Medhi on March 3, as quoted by ANI.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP”s Queen Oja won the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency with a significant margin of 3,45,606 votes. By bringing a new face to the constituency, the BJP is aiming to retain Guwahati.
