Madhab Rajbanshi contests in the Darrang Udalguri constituency on a Congress ticket in the Lok Sabha election 2024. The Udalguri-Darrang Lok Sabha constituency is a newly created electoral seat carved out of the former Mangaldoi constituency.
Madhab Rajbanshi started his political tenure through his association with the Congress party. He also represented the Congress party in the 1998 Lok Sabha election. His political history marked his victory in the Lok Sabha election in 1998 on a Congress ticket, where he secured 7,05,749, which is 59.9% of the total votes. Later his political journey found its new path as he joined the Asom Gana Parishad on 18th March 2014, cutting his ties with the grand old party.
The Election Commission’s final order on the delimitation of parliamentary and assembly constituencies in Assam, published on August 11th, 2023, paved the way for the formation of the Udalguri-Darrang constituency. As per the 2011 census, Darrang district boasts a population of 928,500, while Udalguri district’s population stands at 831,668. This constituency is gearing up for a significant electoral showdown as the 2024 Lok Sabha elections draw near. This constituency, deeply rooted in Assam’s political history, stands as a mixed pot of Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, embodying the diverse fabric of the state.
This new Darrang Udalguri constituency witnessed the electoral battle between Madhab Rajbanshi of the Congress and Dilip Saika of BJP, who won the last Mangaldoi constituency Lok Sabha election 2019 securing 735469 votes, thus declaring the victory against Bhubaneswar Kalita of Congress, who secured 596924 votes.
