Journalists Protest Restrictions On Their Movement In The Parliament

New Delhi: Journalists staged a protest in India’s Parliament against the new restrictions on their movement within the premises, which now prevent them from standing in front of “Makar Dwar,” a key interaction point with the parliamentarians.

The Press Club of India shared a video highlighting the protest, demanding the immediate lifting of these restrictions.

Renowned journalist Rajdeep Sardesai expressed his support, calling for the removal of these limitations to ensure free interaction with MPs.

Social media personality Akash Banerjee criticized the restrictions, stating that journalism has been metaphorically caged. Veteran journalist Vijaita Singh compared covering Parliament to navigating a battlefield, emphasizing the hostile environment journalists face.

Poornima Joshi from Hindu Businessline described parliamentary coverage as a public service, vital for decoding legislation and policy for the public. She condemned the restrictions as a deliberate suppression of information since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Senior journalist Swati Chaturvedi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Speaker Om Birla of undermining press freedom in the world’s largest democracy. She called for a collective boycott of parliamentary reporting until full access is restored.

Meanwhile, another video emerged in which Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi interacting with the protesting journalists outside the Parliament as he was entering the premises before his Budget speech.

“Restrictions have been imposed on media personnel in Parliament. They have been instructed to remain within a limited area. On reaching Parliament today, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi stopped his car there and enquired about the well being of the media persons,” Congress handle said.
