
First Delhi BJP President & Senior Leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra Dies At 93
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the first president of Delhi BJP, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, died in New Delhi on Tuesday morning at the age of 93. He was admitted to AIIMS, where doctors confirmed his death earlier in the day. His mortal remains were later brought to his residence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief, calling Malhotra an “outstanding leader” who played a “vital role” in strengthening the party in the national capital. “He is also remembered for his Parliamentary interventions and pained by his passing away—condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.

The Delhi BJP unit also mourned the loss, describing Malhotra’s demise as “deeply saddening” and recalling his role as the party’s first state president. “The entire BJP family stands with his family in this hour of grief,” the unit posted.

Born on December 3, 1931, in Lahore, British India, Malhotra was a five-time Member of Parliament and a two-time MLA from Delhi. He began his political journey as President of the Delhi Pradesh Jana Sangh (1972–75) and later served two terms as BJP Delhi Pradesh President (1977–80 and 1980–84). Alongside leaders like Kedar Nath Sahni and Madan Lal Khurana, he was instrumental in building the BJP’s stronghold in the capital.

Malhotra’s most notable victory came in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, when he defeated former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In 2004, he remained the only BJP candidate to win a seat from Delhi.
Beyond politics, Malhotra was an educationist with a doctorate in Hindi literature, and he also contributed to sports administration, particularly in chess and archery.
