While addressing the convocation function at the Barkatullah University, Madhya Pradesh’s Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar on Tuesday claimed that America was discovered by “our ancestors”, and not by Christopher Columbus as taught to students.

Some of the other claims made by the minister at the conference include Bal Bahu, an Indian architect has helped in the design of the city of Beijing in China and the Rigveda was the first to discover that earth revolves around the sun.

This statement was made in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai C. Patel and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. The higher education minister has said that back in the 8th century, an Indian sailor had gone to America and built several temples in San Diego, which are being documented in museums and libraries.

“When we went there, we helped develop their culture, the Maya civilization, by integrating with it, which is India’s way of thinking and philosophy that should have been taught to students… If something needed to be taught, it should have been correctly taught – that our ancestors discovered America, not Columbus,” Parmar said.

He further added that Vasco Da Gama followed Chandan, an Indian trader, however, the teachers wrongly taught the students that the sea route to India was discovered by Vasco Da Gama.

He said that “historians systematically undermined India’s strengths”, and because of “false facts, a negative image of India was presented to the world”.

He further went on to state that the Polish astronomer Copernicus’s theory “that the Sun is stationary, and what Galileo said – that the Sun is stationary and all the planets, including Earth, revolve around it- were already stated in our ancient texts”.

The minister also spoke about the Olympics and India’s ancient history with stadiums. He said that though the Olympics have been around 2,800 years, developing the concept of stadiums and collective games in India is even older. “ In the excavations at the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, stadiums were found that date back… well before 2,800 or even 3,000 years ago. This shows that our ancestors were already familiar with sports and could build stadiums, proving that they were advanced in many areas,” he said.
