The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma came under fire after she referred to a false postmortem report of Ram Gopal Mishra, who was shot dead in the Maharajganj area of Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, during a communal flare-up.

During an event in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr, Sharma falsely claimed that Mishra was shot 35 times and had his “nails pulled out, stomach ripped out, eyes gouged out.” While making such claims, the BJP leader was referring to a fake postmortem report regarding Mishra’s death.

When Sharma was confronted with the false claim, she apologised for her statements on social media platform X. “I reiterated what I had heard in the media about late Ram Gopal Mishra ji. I was not aware of the clarification in the postmortem report. I take back my words and apologise,” the BJP leader tweeted.

The former BJP spokesperson had previously made headlines for her remarks on the Prophet Muhammad triggered huge protests and a diplomatic row.

Violence broke out during a Durga Puja Visarjan program in UP’s Bahraich when 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra allegedly climbed onto the roof of the house of Abdul Hameed, took down a green flag that was hoisted there, and raised a saffron flag as a mob downstairs chanted slogans and cheered him on. Hameed allegedly shot at Mishra.

Following his death, several media agencies, including Aaj Tak, claimed to possess the fake postmortem report and spread misinformation, prompting the Bahraich police to issue a stern warning against the spread of rumours. The police dismissed claims of Mishra being electrocuted, attacked with a sword, or had his nails pulled out and called them “baseless.” The police further said that the post-mortem report confirmed the cause of death as gunshot wounds.
