Maharajganj town and its surrounding area in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh remained tense following the communal violence on Sunday during a Durga idol immersion procession that left one person killed and several others injured.
Communal violence erupted in the region when 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra was shot dead during the Durga idol procession. Anchor Sudhir Chaudhary on the Aaj Tak news channel claimed to have the details of Mishra’s postmortem report and asserted that his nails were pulled out, bruised by swords, and he was shot more than 25 times. He claimed that Mishra was also given an electric shock.

The media cell of the Bahraich Police however, rejected the claim and called it is “misleading.” A statement issued by the police said that such rumors are making rounds on social media with the aim of disturbing communal harmony. The police also warned of legal action against those spreading misinformation.
Chaudhary also made a communal remark during the show by suggesting that such brutality is expected to be inflicted on the Hindu minorities in Bangladesh but has happened in India instead.

On October 13, after a heated argument over the music being played during the procession, Mishra had allegedly climbed onto the roof of the house of Abdul Hameed, took down a green flag that was hoisted there, and raised a saffron flag, cheered by the crowd. Hameed allegedly shot at Mishra.
