After the Congress expressed its discontent over not restoring the statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, Rajya Sabha MP and senior Supreme Court advocate Kapil Sibal today said that reducing the J&K to the Union Territory is a constitutional misdemeanor. He also demanded the restoration of statehood to the erstwhile state.
The Union Government in 2019 had brought the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, making the state two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The remark by the MP comes a day after National Conference chief Omar Abdullah took oath as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir following the victory in the first assembly elections after the abrogation of Article 370.
In a social media post, the senior Supreme Court advocate wrote, “It was a constitutional misdemeanor to have reduced the state of J&K to a Union Territory,” underscoring that it was wrong for the Supreme Court not to have decided that issue. “Time to restore statehood This is the constitutional right of the people of J&K,” Sibal wrote.
Notably, the apex court has on Thursday agreed to hear a petition demanding a time-bound restoration of statehood to the J&K.
