What The Centre Said On Meeting India's Rising Demand For Crude Oil, Natural Gas?
New Delhi: India’s economy is all set to drive major demand for energy over the coming years. The country’s crude oil demand is projected to rise by 37% and natural gas demand by 85% by 2035, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Nationalist Congress Party MP Sunil Dattatray Tatkare on Thursday asked the ministry of petroleum and natural gas on whether the government has taken any steps to ensure that the expected rise in country’s crude oil and natural gas demand by 2035. He also sought information regarding the steps the Centre took boost sources such as Coal Bed Methane, Synthetic Natural Gas, Shale Oil and Gas etc. to meet this demand.

The petroleum ministry responded that it has implemented a range of policy measures and sectoral reforms to enhance the domestic production and exploration of the conventional resources. Some of the key initiatives includes increasing domestic exploration and production, expanding natural gas infrastructure, building strategic crude storage capacities, boosting Alternative Energy Sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote sustainable energy source, among others.
The MP had also asked the ministry if the government and various companies in this sector are prepared in terms of transport and storage infrastructure to deal with this major rise in demand, and also sought the methods through which petrochemical and green energy components can be integrated to meet future energy demand.
