'Cramped Bedrooms' Force Paris 2024 Athletes To Ditch Olympic Village For Hotel Rooms

The Olympic Village is often an area where the athletes participating in the Games bond over music, food, discussions, and sometimes over sex. However, in Paris 2024, some athletes are choosing to move away from their designated rooms at the Olympic Village to stay in hotel rooms.

While the rooms at the Olympic Village are supposed to be an area of relaxation for the athletes, the cramped bedrooms at Paris 2024, have raised some eyebrows after US tennis star Coco Gauff posted a video on TikTok highlighting the tight spaces where women athletes are doing their hair and makeup.

“10 girls, two bathrooms,” Gauff wrote in a text overlay. (The video was accompanied by screaming sound effects drawn from the horror movies “Pearl” and “Hereditary.”)

“I would go to a hotel,” a TikTok user commented. Gauff’s reply: “All the tennis girls moved to a hotel except me. so now just 5 girls two bathrooms.” She elaborated in another reply: “Well it’s only 5 girls now so I have the room alone. roommates are very chill.”

The bedrooms at Paris 2024 were designed using cardboard to reduce carbon footprints, keeping the environment in mind. Notably, Olympians have often defined the rooms at the Olympic Village to be small with swimmer Mark Spitz taking a hilarious dig at it and categorizing them as a “low-cost IKEA look.”

The sleeping conditions at the Games Village are also much discussed with the cardboard situation often brought to light. However, Gauff said that she has all bases covered by saying: “archery team lended me a mattress topper”, while American gymnastics ace Simone Biles replied on a TikTok user post: “the bed sucks…… BUT we are getting mattress toppers so hopefully it’ll get better.”
