Hansi Flick, former player and ex-Bayern Munich manager was sacked by Germany following Saturday”s 4-1 friendly defeat by the hands of Japan in Wolfsburg. They have lost to Belgium, Poland, Colombia and Japan since their World Cup group stage exit.
Germany is nine months away from hosting the European Championship next summer. Rudi Voller, who have managed the team from 2000 to 2004 will take up the role temporarily for Tuesdays friendly match with France.
He will be assisted by Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner.
German Football Association President Bernd Neuendorf said: “The men”s senior national team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and confidence in our own country.”
“For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions of my time in office so far because I appreciate Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. So, the decision was inevitable.”
But Hansi Flick maintained a defiant front after the defeat and reasserted that he was the right coach to lead the team forward.
“I think we are doing well and I am the right coach,” he said.
The 58-year-old was only able to manage 12 wins out of 25 matches since replacing Joachim Low in August 2021. Flick oversaw eight consecutive wins at the start of his reign but failed to even cross the group stage in Qatar World Cup. Oman and Peru are the only two countries they have managed to beat in the past 12 months.
Hansi flick was appointed as the head coach in 2021 after winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich. Flick is the first manager to be sacked from the role since its initial creation in 1926.
The German Football Association said it hoped to announce Flick”s full-time replacement “as soon as possible”.
