Arjuna awardee Mohammed Shami joined forces with PM Narendra Modi to promote Lakshadweep tourism amid the ongoing India-Maldives row. The premier India fast bowler encouraged his fellow citizens to explore the beauty of the Indian beaches.

His move comes after the derogatory and anti-India remarks made by the Maldives minister, leaders, and other public figures after PM Modi visited Lakshadweep and promoted the picturesque island.

“We should promote our tourism. No matter which way the country moves forward, it is good for everyone. PM is trying to make our country move forward so we should also support it,” Shami told ANI.

Earlier, ex-cricketers like Suresh Raina came out in support of PM Modi. He urged Indian citizens to unite against Maldives” hate and explore the Indian island. The former India batter was also upset to witness hate comments and criticism from the Maldives, especially after the Indians have contributed largely towards Maldives tourism.

“I saw remarks from prominent public figures in the Maldives, expressing hateful and racist comments directed towards Indians. It”s disheartening to witness such negativity, especially considering that India contributes significantly to their economy, crisis management and so many other aspects,” Raina tweeted.

“Having visited the Maldives multiple times and always expressing admiration for the destination”s beauty, I believe it”s crucial to prioritize our self-respect. In light of recent events, let”s unite and choose to #ExploreIndianIslands, supporting our own vibrant tourism industry. It”s time to celebrate and appreciate the rich experiences that our own has to offer,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has condemned the derogatory remarks made by officials against PM Modi and the people of India. In a statement issued by MATI, it noted that India has always been their closest neighbour and a first responder to various crisis-hit situations in the history of Maldives.
