As a first step towards India’s vision to be the sports powerhouse, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday welcomed India’s interest to host the Olympic Games in the future.

“The International Olympic Committee very much welcomes India’s interest in hosting a future edition of the Olympic Games,” the IOC said on Wednesday in a statement to Hindustan Times.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 141st IOC session in Mumbai last year had said in a statement about India’s eagerness to host the 2036 Olympics. Similarly, the Indian Olympic Association too in early October had sent a ‘letter of intent’ to the IOC regarding bidding for the Games.

The IOA formally communicated India’s desire to host the Olympics and Paralympics Games in 2036 to the Future Host Commission of the IOC on October 1.

“With its huge passion for sport and youthful population, India has much to offer for the future of the Olympic Movement,” the IOC said.
It also added that the IOC has interested parties from four continents currently in talks with FHC over hosting the Olympics.

“Currently there are Interested Parties from four continents discussing with the IOC in an informal and non-committal way about hosting a future edition of the Olympic Games.”

The other countries that have raised their interest in hosting the 2036 Games are Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Indonesia, Barcelona, and Chile.

However, the IOC has not yet revealed the names of the cities that would host the Olympics. “The IOC has not yet been informed by the IOA of any selected potential host region,” IOC said.

Apart from the 2036 Olympics, India is also pitching to organize the 2030 Youth Olympics as well.

Currently, the Indian Olympic Association has been going through internal wrangling regarding the appointment of CEO Raghuram Iyer. PT Usha, IOA President, however, despite the internal challenges, has assured that their commitment towards hosting the 2036 Summer Games remains steadfast.

IOC has been keeping a close watch on the situation and last month, it requested the committee to resolve the issue urgently.
