Premier India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah bowled like a dream on Day 2 of the Vizag Test on Thursday. After England veteran James Anderson resumed the day with the key scalp of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Bumrah returned in the second innings to get the prized wicket of Joe Root, Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Tom Hartley, and the English seamer to wreak havoc on the oppositions.
In the process, Bumrah dismissed the No.3, No.4, No.5, and No.6 of the opposition in an innings in a Test match in India. The only seamer to do so before Bumrah was former India captain Kapil Dev during his spell of 9/83 against the West Indies in Ahmedabad in 1983.
Incidentally, his figures of 6/45 in the first innings also helped him become the fastest India bowler to scalp 150 wickets in the longest format. He has taken the fewest balls at 6781 to achieve the feat while Umesh Yadav took 7661. The others on the list include Mohammed Shami (7755), Dev (8378) and Ravichandran Ashwin (8380). However, the India pace spearhead admitted that he likes to look over statics as he focuses on helping the team win.
“Try and avoid looking at numbers. When you do that, you build pressure and don”t enjoy yourself,” Bumrah said.
“In India reverse swing plays a big role. Born in this country, you know how to use it to your advantage. In India, you have to learn how to bowl reverse. I”ve grown up watching reverse swing set ups, legendary bowlers bowling magical deliveries. To be able to do it now, very happy with that.”
Bumrah also mentioned that he has enjoyed bowling on every surface while playing in the SENA nations but the South African conditions remain close to his heart as he made his Test debut there in 2018.
Since then, the Ahmedabad-native has scalped 152 wickets in the longest format in 34 matches.
