'Are Indians Samples'?: Bill Gates Faces Backlash For Calling India Laboratory To Try Things

A recent podcast of former Microsoft CEO and philanthropist Bill Gates has drawn sharp flak online after the US billionaire referred to India as “a kind of laboratory to try things.” The remark did not sit well with netizens in India, with many asking the businessman to stay out of India if he maintain such language about the country. Gates had visited India earlier this year, exploring different cities and events in the country.

During the podcast, Gates said that India is an example of a country where there are plenty of things that are difficult there. “The health, nutrition, and education are improving, and they are stable enough and generating their own government revenue enough that it’s very likely that 20 years from now people will be dramatically better off, and it’s kind of a laboratory to try things that then when you prove them out in India, you can take to other places,” Bill Gates was heard saying in the clip shared by several social media users.

However, criticising the foreign business tycoon’s remark, many Indians have felt disgrace towards Gates for considering human beings in India as samples.

Reacting to Bill Gates remark, an X user, Nikhil Kharoo, said the human beings in India are samples for Bill Gates’ laboratory to try things, and once they are proven to be effective, they are taken to the US. “This clip doesn’t sound right no matter in what context you hear this. That’s why research backed by governments can often have vested interests,” he wrote, asking, “Didn’t @elonmusk raise this as well?

 

Senior lawyer Prasanth Bhushan noted that the US businessman says he uses India as a laboratory for testing new drugs on us. “And our government allows this evil man & his foundations to use us as guinea pigs! Shocking and shameful!” he added.
