The (Indian Premier League) IPL 2024 retention deadline day witnessed some numerous changes and releases of the players from their respective franchises. A total of 85 individuals were released on the day. One of the key announcements was the release of Hardik Pandya, the skipper of the Gujarat Titans amid talks of him returning to his former team, Mumbai Indians.

The other top exclusions include former England skipper Ben Stokes from Chennai Super Kings, pacer Jofra Archer from Mumbai Indians, and all-rounder Shardul Thakur from Kolkata Knight Riders, among others.

All the IPL teams chose to shuffle their team as they announced their list of retained and released players of the IPL ahead of mini-auction in December 19. Punjab Kings was the team releasing least number of players while Kolkata Knight Riders released the maximum.

A total of 174 players were released on November 26. Punjab Kings, Sunrise Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings retained maximum players while Kolkata knight riders was the team which retained the least number of players.

As the franchises has released its final list, the next big step will be taken on 2024 auction day in Dubai on December 19.

As per the IPL regulations, each franchise is permitted a squad of 25 players, with a maximum of 8 being foreign players. Additionally, the players can include a maximum of 4 overseas players in the playing XI.

An IPL team has the right to retain its entire squad and make no changes to it before a mini-auction. Meanwhile, the release of a player is a process of letting go of an individual player from the team. An IPL team can release any number of players before mega and mini-auction. But an icon player cannot be traded in a trade deal but the team captain can be traded.

If multiple franchises express interest in one player during a trade, then selling franchise can decide the player’s destination with the players consent.

However, before a mega auction, the team can retain a maximum of four players. But the teams are not permitted to retain more than three Indian players or two oversea players.

Highlights Of Retention Day:

Mumbai Indian’s signing of Hardik Pandya is the talk of the town. The Gujarat Titan’s (GT) skipper has decided to re-join his old franchise after spending two seasons with GT. Meanwhile, GT has announced Shubman Gill as their skipper. On the other hand, they have traded Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore. While, Delhi Capitals has decided to retain wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant.
