The event was indeed a grand celebration of resilience, dominance, and iconic legacies, as the world’s top athletes were honoured for their incredible achievements over the past year.

Record-breaking pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis and America’s legendary gymnast Simone Biles bagged the top honours at the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony. Meanwhile, Biles, who had returned to action after a break, had clinched three gold and one silver medal in a stunning comeback at the Paris Olympics and further claimed her fourth Laureus award and has now equalled the record of Serena Williams.

Tennis great Rafael Nadal was conferred the Laureus Sporting Icon Award in the award ceremony. A standing ovation for the Spanish tennis legend capped off the glittering night.

“Back in 2006 I won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award in Barcelona… Tennis and sports in general has given me so much…,” Nadal said.

FC Barcelona’s young star Lamine Yamal won the prestigious award titled “Breakthrough of the Year”. Meanwhile, Real Madrid was also crowned as the “Team of the Year” at the gala.

The only Indian athlete who was nominated for the award, Rishabh Pant, however, missed out grabbing one which was eventually clinched by Rebeca Andrade. Andrade got the “Comeback of the Year” award for her inspirational return from a series of career-threatening injuries.
