Spanish football league Real Madrid has launched an investigation into the racist comments directed against the players during Saturday’s El Classico match.
Lamine Yamal who is of Equatorial Guinean and Moroccan heritage was targeted with xenophobic and racist abuse at Bernabeu. Madrid in its statement on Sunday said that “it has opened an investigation in order to locate and identify the perpetrators of these deplorable and despicable and judicial measures can be taken”.

However, Lamine’s team Barcelona has not yet responded to the incident. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga have taken steps to tackle an increase in racist abuse with measures including partial stadium closures.
LaLiga also announced that it would report the incident to the National Police’s Hate Crime Group and coordinate with the Hate Crime and Discrimination Unit at the State Attorney General’s Office. “LaLiga strongly condemns the events that occurred at the Santiago Bernabéu and remains firm in its commitment to eradicate any type of racist behavior and hatred inside and outside stadiums.”

Videos have circulated on social media showing some of the Real Madrid fans racially abusing the Barcelona prodigy.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr came showing support for FC Barcelona’s Lamine. “It’s regrettable what happened yesterday at the Bernabeu with racist insults,” Vinicius wrote on X. “There is no place for these criminals in our society. All my support to Lamine, Ansu, and Raphinha. I know that Madrid and the police will do the things [necessary] to identify and punish the guilty!!” he added.
Vinicius has been an outspoken advocate against racism in football and he has frequently addressed the abuse the player had endured during the matches.

On Thursday, four people were arrested and questioned in Spain on suspicion of conducting an online hate campaign encouraging fans to racially abuse Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr.
