In the 25th edition of the Laureus Sports Awards, the 25-year old Duplantis claimed the award surpassing the top contenders like Carlos Alcaraz, Leon Marchand, Tadej Pogacar, and Max Verstappen. Duplantis, who was nominated the race in the last two years, won his first World Sportsman of the Year after a thumping year. In 2024,Duplantis won the gold medal in the Paris Olympics and World Indoor Championship, both for a second straight time. En route to his olympic gold, he broke the world record for ninth time.
Simone Biles, conquering the World Sportswoman of the Year for fourth time, matched the record of Serena Williams at Laureus. Marking her heroic comeback after a break, Biles clinched three gold and one silver medal in the Paris Olympics.

The Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade claimed the accolade of World Comeback of the year for her gold in the floor exercise, silver in the all-around and vault, and bronze in the team event in Paris. Andrade made an inspirational comeback after she earlier suggested quitting the game following three ACL injuries. Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant was nominated for the award for his strong return to the sport after 14 months due to a fatal car crash.
Another notable personality in the award night was the tennis legend Rafael Nadal who was bestowed the Laureus Sporting Icon Award. The Spanish great retired from professional tennis last year at the age of 38.
