Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi is the front-runner to take over the role of Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) chief from Jay Shah, after the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) honorary secretary was named the youngest chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Shah’s appointment as the ICC Chairman meant that the roles of BCCI honorary secretary and ACC chairman are up for grabs with Rohan Jaitley and the PCB chief in line to take up the respective positions.
It is reported that Naqvi will be officially named as the ACC chairman during the council meeting later this year.
“When the ACC meets later this year, it will confirm that Naqvi will be the next president for a two-year term,” the PTI source quoted. “When Jay Shah steps down, the PCB chief will take over.”
Shah took over the role of ICC Chairman after the incumbent Greg Barclay decided to step down from his position. He was backed by council members from England and Australia to take up the position.
“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah stated after being elected as the new ICC boss unopposed.
“I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”
The 35-year-old became the youngest ICC Chairman. He will serve a three-year role and will be eligible to become the BCCI President in 2028.
