The Ashoka Road in downtown Kingston will be soon renamed after Jamaica’s greatest women’s Olympic sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
This is the same street where the eight-time Olympic medallist — individual and team events — was born and raised. She will be further celebrated in her native land with the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation, KSMAC, approving the decision on October 8, to rename the street in Waterhouse after the daughter of the soil.
The town councillor Byron Clarke appreciated Fraser-Pryce’s contribution towards the upliftment of the Waterhouse community through the Pocket Rocket Foundation.
She will be also conferred with the ‘Keys of the City of Kingston’, the highest honor bestowed by the municipal corporation.
The three-time Olympic gold medallist hung her spikes after an injury-hit Paris 2024 that saw her withdraw from the women’s 100m event and 4x100m relay final.
“It is difficult for me to find the words to describe the depth of my disappointment,” Fraser-Pryce wrote on social media after her 100m withdrawal. “The support of my fans, my country and the larger community has rooted me in immense gratitude that has sustained me throughout my career.”
“My faith has always affirmed my trust in my journey,” she added.
It remains to be seen if she returns to track & field to coach and groom the young talents.
