Mansukh Mandaviya, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, on Tuesday, announced cash rewards for the Paris Paralympics 2024 medal winners during a felicitation event.
The rewards will see the Paris Paralympics gold medallists bagging INR 75 lakh, silver winners earning INR 50 lakh, and the bronze medal winners getting richer by INR 30 lakh. Meanwhile, those who clinched medals in the mixed events like archer Sheetal Devi will bag INR 22.5 lakh.
The Sports Minister also pledged to support and provide facilities to the para-athletes for a better medal haul at the Los Angeles Paralympics.
“The country is rising in Paralympics and para sports. From 4 medals in 2016, India have won 19 medals in Tokyo and 29 in Paris with 18th place finish,” Mandaviya said.
“We will provide all the facilities to all of our para-athletes so that we can win more medals and gold medals in the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.”
The Indian contingent concluded the Paris Paralympics with a record 29 medals on Sunday, including seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze, bettering their haul of 19 at Tokyo 2020. The contingent finished at the 18th spot — their best-ever finish in the Paralympics — since the Tel Aviv Games in 1968.
India overcame top nations like Switzerland, Belgium, South Korea, Turkey, and Argentina to finish at the top 20 spot while China, Great Britain, the USA, and Italy took the top-10 ranking.
