Former Indian batter VVS Laxman is set to serve as India’s head coach for the four-match Twenty 20 International series against South Africa which is scheduled to begin on November 8. Laxman will step in for coach Gautam Gambhir, India’s full-time head coach, who will be heading to Australia with the Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
This was not the first time, Laxman had served as the head coach for the Men in Blue. He had previously coached India during its tour of Zimbabwe and many others.

The tour was not originally part of India’s schedule but was recently arranged following a discussion between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket South Africa (CSA).
Laxman will be accompanied by other members of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru like Sairaj Bahutule, Hrishikesh Kantikar and Subhadeep Gosh. The trio had recently served as India’s coach in the Asia Emerging Cup tournament in Oman.
India will play four Twenty-20 Internationals in Durban, Gqeberha, Centurion and Johannesburg on November 8, 10, 13 and 15 respectively.
Meanwhile, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar questioned the logic behind having this series amid the ongoing domestic season.
“Next month, there’s a needless four-match T20 series in South Africa before the tour to Australia. There will also be an ‘A‘ team touring Australia next month, so effectively about 50 to 60 players will not be available for their State teams in the premier national tournament, the Ranji Trophy,” he wrote in Sport Star.
