The chances of Argentina’s World Cup-winning football team visiting India have risen significantly, particularly in Kerala, where the South American team enjoys a massive following. Kerala’s Sports Minister, V Abdurahiman, is set to travel to Spain in an effort to invite the Argentinian team to the football-crazy state. The minister’s journey is scheduled for tomorrow morning, and he will be accompanied by the director and secretary of Kerala’s sports department.
Once in Madrid, Minister Abdurahiman will hold discussions with representatives from the Argentina Football Association (AFA) to explore the possibility of bringing the World Cup champions to Kerala. This move comes after the All India Football Federation (AIFF) had earlier declined an invitation for Argentina to play a friendly match in India due to the high cost involved. In response, the Kerala government renewed its efforts to directly engage with Argentina, keeping the dream alive for millions of fans in the state.
Kerala’s passionate football culture attracted international attention during Argentina’s victorious World Cup campaign. Following the tournament, the Argentina Football Association expressed its gratitude towards Kerala for its enthusiastic support. The state’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, also met with Argentina’s ambassador to India, expressing interest in collaborating with the country to develop football in Kerala.
Argentina had visited India in 2011 when Lionel Messi and his teammates played a friendly match against Venezuela in Kolkata. That match drew a massive crowd of 85,000 spectators to Salt Lake Stadium, demonstrating India’s deep admiration for Argentinian football.
Argentina’s triumphant campaign in Qatar 2022 remains fresh in the minds of football enthusiasts. Led by Messi, the team secured its third World Cup title by defeating France in a dramatic final, with Messi’s leadership and performances being hailed as one of the greatest in football history.
