The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the Indian opener Shubman Gill will miss the match against Afghanistan which is scheduled to be held on October 11.
Having already missed the opening World Cup match against Australia in Chennai on Sunday due to dengue fever, Shubman will once again miss another game of the tournament. BCCI has confirmed that Shubman will not be travelling with the Indian team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team, BCCI added.
In the opening match, Shubman was replaced by Ishan Kishan. Unfortunately, Kishan along with the skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed without adding any runs to the scoreboard.
However, by the remarkable show presented by the duo KL Rahul and Virat Kohli led to the victory of India against Australia. They forged a pivotal 165-run partnership which secured the victory.
In the absence of Gill, Ishan is likely to open with Rohit in the match against Afghanistan. With Gills out, Shreyas Iyer is most likely to be featured in the middle-order for India’s second World Cup game. He too wasn’t able to give his best in the last game as he was forced to leave the field with a duck.
Gill is the leading run-getter in ODIs this year with 1230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. In his last four ODIs, he has hit two centuries and a half-century. And it is expected that Gill will rejoin the team for the match against the arch-rivals Pakistan.
After the match against Afghanistan, India will travel from Delhi to Ahmedabad for their fixture against Pakistan on October 14.
