Former Intel India head Avtar Saini died in a road crash in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday. Police said that Avtar Saini died after a speeding taxi rammed into his bicycle. The tragic incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday on Palm Beach Road in Nerul.
According to an NDTV report, Avtar Saini was riding his bicycle along with other cyclists when his bicycle was hit from the back by a speeding taxi. When the car driver tried to escape, the cycle”s frame got wedged under the car, and 68-year-old Avtar Saini was dragged for some distance. As per the report, Avtar Saini suffered severe injuries even though he was wearing a helmet. Fellow cyclists rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Avtar Saini, who served as vice president at Intel India from 1982 to 2004, had greatly contributed to the Pentium processor”s design and development. He was credited with working on the Intel 386 and 486 microprocessors.
Gokul V Subramaniam, Intel India president, has expressed grief over Avtar Saini”s death. “At Intel, we are deeply saddened by the demise of former country manager and director Intel South Asia, Avtar Saini,” wrote Gokul V Subramaniam in a post on LinkedIn. The Intel India President also added that Avtar played a key role in setting up the Intel R&D center in India. He had a long and illustrious career at Intel from 1982 to 2004 during which he was instrumental in the design of several processors including Intel 386, Intel 486, Pentium, and more. Avtar will be remembered as a prolific inventor, an outstanding leader and a valuable mentor,” added Gokul V Subramaniam in his LinkedIn post.
