Nvidia, the world”s largest maker of AI chips, is reportedly preparing to compete with Intel in the PC industry. A report from Reuters suggests that NVIDIA is using Arm Holdings PLC’s technology to design central processing units (CPUs) that would run Microsoft’s Windows operating system.
Nvidia”s initiative is part of Microsoft’s effort to help chip companies develop Arm-based processors for Windows PCs. As per the preliminary third-quarter data from research firm IDC, Microsoft is making these efforts to compete with Apple in the market. As per IDC”s data, Apple”s market share has nearly doubled in the three years since unveiling the Arm-based Apple Silicon for its Mac computers. It is to be noted that Apple has depended on Intel”s chips in its Mac lineup since 2006. In 2020, Apple shifted their Macs to Apple Silicon with the introduction of the Apple M1. In 2021, Apple introduced the second wave of Apple Silicon-powered Macs.
On the other hand, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is also making plans to develop Arm-based processors. Reuters also reported that the new chips from AMD and Nvidia may not arrive on the market until 2025. With this, both NVIDIA and AMD will join Qualcomm. Since 2016, the American company Qualcomm has been making Arm-based chips for laptops. During an upcoming event, Qualcomm may reveal more details about a flagship chip designed by a team of former Apple engineers. According to Counterpoint Research’s report, the market share of personal computers (PCs) based on Arm architecture will almost double from 14% now to 25% by 2027.
