Google is all set to end the use of passwords and made a significant announcement that passkeys will be the new default sign-in method for billions of its users. This new default option is applicable across all personal Google accounts. Google mentioned in its latest blog post that passkeys are 40% faster than passwords.
When users sign in to their accounts, they will be able to see prompts to create and use passkeys. Users can also see the “Skip password when possible” option toggled on in their Google Account settings. With passkeys, users can sign in with a fingerprint, facial recognition, PIN, or pattern. This means that users no need to remember all those numbers and special characters in passwords. Passkeys, that rely on a type of cryptography that makes them more secure, is introduced to reduce the risk of cyber attacks.
Last year, Google announced that they would support a new sign-in standard created by the FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance that would encourage people around the globe to enter a “passwordless future.” It will shift the signing in method to more secure and fast process. Google already mentioned earlier that passkeys will replace passwords. While introducing this method, Google also considered the factors that passwords are getting stolen and password authentication process is imperfect and time consuming. Recently, Uber and eBay have also enabled passkeys. Google also said that even WhatsApp will support the passkey system in the future. However, experts says that it will take some time for passkeys to entirely replace the traditional password method.
