Google introduced the Gemini, its latest AI model, on December 6. Google Gemini comes in three sizes: Gemini Nano, Gemini Pro, and Gemini Ultra. On December 13, Google released Gemini Pro for developers and enterprises. Gemini Pro will be made available to developers through the Gemini API in the company”s free web-based developer tool, Google AI Studio. The flagship AI model will be available to enterprises through Google Cloud”s fully managed AI platform, Vertex AI.

“Today, we’re making Gemini Pro available for developers and enterprises to build for your own use cases,” wrote Google on its blog post on December 13. According to Google, Gemini Pro outperforms other similarly-sized models on research benchmarks. The current Gemini Pro version arrives with a 32K context window for text, and future versions will be equipped with a larger context window. “It’s free to use right now, within limits, and it will be competitively priced,” added the tech giant.

Google claims that the Gemini Pro model supports 38 languages across more than 180 countries and territories globally. The AI model is also equipped with various features, including function calling, embeddings, semantic retrieval, custom knowledge grounding, and chat functionality. Notably, Gemini Pro accepts text as input and generates text as output. Google mentioned that a dedicated Gemini Pro Vision multimodal endpoint is also available that accepts text and imagery as input with text output.

Developers will have free access to Gemini Pro and Gemini Pro Vision through Google AI Studio, which allows 60 requests per minute. Google AI Studio is a free, web-based developer tool that helps users develop prompts and then get an API key to use in their app development. Meanwhile, Vertex AI developers can try the same AI models with the same rate limits at no cost. The general availability is until early next year, after which there will be a charge per 1,000 characters or per image across Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.
