Instagram Rolls Out 'Teen Accounts' With Parental Control For Child Safety.

Meta platform Instagram has rolled out new privacy features and parental control for Instagram for those under 18, on Tuesday. This new ‘Teen Accounts” upgrade aims to ensure the safety of young users who use Instagram. Mark Zuckerberg announced on his Threads platform that the platform ponders getting built-in protections including what they see and who they are messaging.

The ‘Teen Account’ is designated to provide safety and security which is automatically activated for users along with parental monitoring and app control. This default account cannot be public as it has an inbuilt private mode that only the user and those who follow the user or are already connected with them on the app could tag and message them.

Instagram has set up the content filter in a meticulous and restrictive way that offers a high level of safety for teen accounts. It will make sure that exposure to inappropriate content or material is systemically banned or hidden from teenagers.

As per Instagram, teenagers under the age of 16 will only be able to change their settings by getting permission or in-app approval from their parents. Parents can access tools and monitor their child’s activities like with whom they communicate through messages and how much time they spend on the app.

It is a concern that the excessive use of social media use can lead to various health issues and can disrupt the sleep pattern. To curb this, Instagram will prompt teen users to shut down the app after 60 minutes of use. Adding to that, a ‘sleep mode’ option will activate during the nighttime hours which would further silence the notifications that promote a healthy social media routine. These updates will be rolled out in 60 days in the US, UK, Australia and other countries but haven’t specified the timeline. The ‘Teen Account” updates will be rolled out in January 2025.
