The popular social media messaging platform WhatsApp has become an essential part of daily life in today’s digitally transformed society. The instant free messaging and calling platform allows users to create groups consisting of members from a specific community or interest group. WhatsApp groups, which include friends, communities, families, professionals, and work-related, among others, play an unavoidable role in the life of each person. Learning to stay safe in familiar and strange WhatsApp groups is therefore a key requirement for the users, irrespective of the group’s character.

To ensure the privacy and security of the users in groups, the Meta run platform has designed several tools and features in the settings. The following information will educate the readers on how to stay safe and secured when being added to a group on WhatsApp.

Once users are added to a new group, they can decide whether to leave or stay seeing the information the planform shows, including the data ‘who created the group, who added you, when it was created, and the descriptions.’

To avoid people adding you to a group without your consent, the user can change the default privacy setting, controlling who can add them to a group. There will be options; select Everyone, My contacts, or My contacts except… and the users can set them according to their wishes.

Further, the safety of the users is enhanced by other features, including the option to report a message in case the users feel it violates community standards or the users’ privacy. The message will then be sent to WhatsApp, while the sender will not be notified. The users can report a message by tapping, holding a message, and then reporting or blocking it.

In case the user thinks a group is violative, including the inflow of spam messages and other problematic contents, they can block and report group admins and members, though it is not possible to block a group. However, users can report the group by tapping the group name and then reporting it. When the users report the group, the last five messages from the group will be forwarded to WhatsApp, while no one in the group, including admins, will be notified.
