WhatsApp is testing a new “Imagine” shortcut that enables users to generate AI-powered images, according to a recent report. This development is part of WhatsApp”s broader exploration of artificial intelligence (AI) features, which has included AI-generated profile photos and stickers. As part of its AI initiatives, Meta introduced a chat assistant called Meta AI across its apps, including WhatsApp, in select regions in 2023. This assistant brings conversational capabilities and image-generation features to users.
According to WABetaInfo, a tracker for WhatsApp updates, the new shortcut for image generation was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.12.4. This shortcut allows users to quickly generate AI-powered images using Meta AI. Currently, Meta AI”s image-generation capabilities can only be accessed via text prompts by tagging the AI chatbot with “@Meta AI” in group chats.
The new “Imagine” feature is speculated to provide a quicker way to generate images for those who frequently use AI images. The shortcut is found in the attachments option, allowing users to easily summon Meta AI”s image generator.
The report suggests that this feature may only be available to users who already have access to Meta AI, which is currently available in select countries, including the US, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. Meta is also testing the WhatsApp chatbot in India. Although the quick image generation via the “Imagine” shortcut is still in development and not yet available even to beta testers, it is expected to be introduced to a wider audience in the future.
