Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified in a landmark Google antitrust trial on Monday and made significant statements against Google. The trial was held at a Washington DC courtroom and Satya Nadella was the witness for the US government. Microsoft CEO stated in the court that Google”s dominance in the search engine market made it very difficult for the rivals, including the traditional competitors and modern startups.
During the trial, Satya Nadella severely criticized tech giant Google for depending on unfair business practices to prevent smaller rivals by making deals with smartphone manufacturers. Nadella also added that Microsoft could never compete against the Google, largely due to its arrangements with Apple. The US government has earlier argued that Google illegally paid $10 billion annually to smartphone manufacturers including Apple and others to be the default in search on their devices in order to stay on top.
“You can call it popular, but to me it”s dominant,” Microsoft CEO said to a Google lawyer during the cross examination. Nadella also stated that Microsoft was willing to pay a huge amount to Apple to give Bing the default status on the iPhone and making this deal with Apple would be “game-changing” for Microsoft. “Defaults are the only thing that matters,” he added. Nadella also said that Bing has remained a very small player as Apple has denied the deal and instead receives billions of dollars every year from the Google. This ongoing three-month trial is a major test of the power of US regulators over various tech giants. Earlier, the prosecutors stated that this significant case was about “the future of the internet”.
