Microsoft has recently announced its plans to eliminate the WordPad application from upcoming versions of the Windows operating system. Microsoft”s decision to remove the WordPad app, which was an integral part of Windows since 1995, was mentioned in the Windows Insider Blog for the latest Windows 11 Canary Channel build.
“Starting with this build, the WordPad and People apps will no longer be installed after doing a clean install of the OS,” said Microsoft in the blog post. The software giant also said that the WordPad will be completely removed and that it will not be possible to reinstall the application in the upcoming release. According to Microsoft, the long-standing WordPad app is a “deprecated Windows feature.” WordPad is a simple, functional text editor that has remained a reliable tool for users with basic text editing needs.
Earlier in September, Microsoft announced that WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in future releases of Windows. On September 1, the company also said that they recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like.doc and.rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like.txt.
With this move, Microsoft is likely promoting the use of more advanced word processing software, like Microsoft Word. Word, which offers a general set of tools for entering, editing, and formatting text, also supports various operating systems.
Meanwhile, Microsoft also informed that People apps will no longer be installed after a clean install of the OS. The company also shared that Steps Recorder will not receive further updates. Steps Recorder, a Windows inbox program, records screenshots of the desktop along with the annotated steps while recording the activity on the screen.
