NASA, the United States space agency, has unveiled the first iteration of its Space Security Best Practices Guide. This ground-breaking move is to enhance mission cybersecurity efforts for both public sector and private sector space activities. The guide will serve as a resource for enhancing the reliability and security of NASA”s space missions.
According to NASA, the guide represents a significant milestone in the agency”s commitment to ensuring the longevity and resilience of its space missions. It is designed to benefit a broad audience beyond NASA. This includes international partners, industry, and others working in the expanding fields of space exploration and development. The Space Security Best Practices Guide offers security guidance for missions, programs, or projects of any scale.
Misty Finical, deputy principal advisor for Enterprise Protection at NASA, said that they recognize the importance of protecting NASA”s space missions from potential threats and vulnerabilities. Misty Finical also added that the guide represents a collective effort to establish a set of principles that will enable the agency to identify and mitigate risks and ensure continued success of their missions, both in Earth’s orbit and beyond.
NASA says that space systems are becoming more integrated and interconnected in terms of both information systems and operational technologies. At the same time, complex systems can also have vulnerabilities. With the new guide, the space agency aims to address these new challenges and implement security measures.
