Netflix announced major changes in its leadership structure as Vice President of Global Public Policy, Dean Garfield and Chief Communications Officer, Rachel Whetstone prepare to leave the company. The company announced it officially on Tuesday.
Co-CEO Ted Sarandos is seeking a candidate for the newly created role of Chief Global Affairs Officer to oversee public policy and communications. However, the company hasn’t mentioned the exact date of their exit as they are still in the position.
Garfield, who joined Netflix in 2019, previously served as CEO of the Information Technology Industry Council and held positions at the Motion Picture Association. Whetstone, with nearly two decades of experience in communications and policy, joined Netflix in 2018 after working at Google, Uber and also Facebook.
This leadership change comes as Netflix navigates complex regulations and increasing competition. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos praised the departing executives, saying, “Rachel and Dean have been invaluable partners, shaping our company and contributing to our success. We’re grateful and wish them the best,” he added.
The search for the Chief Global Affairs Officer continues with no candidate identified yet. This departure follows other recent senior executive exits, including film chief Scott Stuber and vice president of ad sales Peter Naylor.

Netflix’s restructuring has been less severe than its competitors such as Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery which have undergone significant cost-cutting measures lately. Whetstone’s background includes policy advisory roles in UK politics before transitioning to the tech sector.
In recent years, several top Netflix executives have made notable exits. One such example is Lindsay Salt, former Netflix VP of products who joined Amazon in 2022 as head of product for Amazon Ads. During her six-year tenure at Netflix, Salt played a crucial role in shaping the streaming giant’s product strategy.
At Amazon, she now oversees product development for the company’s advertising division. Other notable exits include Bozoma Saint John, former Netflix chief marketing officer who joined Entrée Capital and Jonathan Bing, former Netflix director of original film who joined Sony Pictures.
