On Friday (August 22), ChatGPT maker OpenAI announced plans to open its first office in India. The company is planning to establish its office in New Delhi later this year.

In a statement, Sam Altman, co-founder and chief executive at OpenAI said that the level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. He added that “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader,” including amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the India AI Mission.

“Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” Hindustan Times reports, as Altman is saying.

The AI firm said that, after USA, India is ChatGPT’s second largest market by users and it is “fastest-growing”. India is also one of the top five global developer markets on the OpenAI platform. The country has the largest population of students using ChatGPT worldwide.

Welcoming OpenAI’s partnership with India, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a statement: “OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption.” The minister stated added that IndiaAI Mission is building an ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI.

Recently, Open AI has announced the launch of its most affordable subscription tier yet in India. The new plan, called ChatGPT Go, is priced at ₹399 per month (approximately $4.57) and is designed exclusively for Indian users. Alongside the newly introduced Go plan, OpenAI continues to offer ChatGPT Plus at ₹1,999 per month and its top-tier ChatGPT Pro at ₹19,900 per month.
