Imagine having a super smart computer that can understand and respond to your questions and tasks in a more human-like way. That’s what OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT, is currently working on.
Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared an update on the company’s plans for its next big AI models: GPT-4.5 and GPT-5.

GPT-4.5, also known as Orion, will be OpenAI’s next big language model. This will be the last non-chain-of-thought model by OpenAI. It’s a more advanced AI model that can think and respond more like a human.
Taking to social media platform X, Sam Altman said. “We will next ship GPT-4.5, the model we called Orion internally, as our last non-chain-of-thought model. After that, a top goal for us is to unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks. In both ChatGPT and our API, we will release GPT-5 as a system that integrates a lot of our technology, including o3. We will no longer ship o3 as a standalone model.”
OPENAI ROADMAP UPDATE FOR GPT-4.5 and GPT-5:
We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap and a much better job simplifying our product offerings.
We want AI to “just work” for you; we realise how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten.
We hate…

Everyone, including free users of ChatGPT, will get access to GPT-5. However, free users will have some limitations. They will only be able to use GPT-5 with “standard intelligence setting, subject to abuse thresholds.”
On the other hand, users who pay for OpenAI’s Plus ($20 per month) or Pro ($200 per month) subscriptions will get more advanced features. They will be able to use GPT-5 with higher levels of intelligence and more capabilities.

OpenAI is also planning to move away from using different models for different tasks, according to Altman. Instead, they will create systems that can use all their tools and know when to think for a long time or not. This will make AI more useful and accessible to everyone.
While OpenAI hasn’t given an exact date for when GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 will be released, it’s likely to happen sometime this year.
