Smart Meters: Key To India's Energy Transition And Power Distribution Reforms

Smart meters are set to play a pivotal role in India”s energy transition and power distribution sector reforms. The company aims to participate in upcoming tenders for smart meters, focusing on projects with scalability and economic viability. Rawal emphasises that smart metering will provide distribution companies with valuable data to enhance their energy planning and management.

IntelliSmart Infrastructure, a smart metering and digital solutions firm, anticipates a significant role in the growing demand for smart meters as power distribution companies prepare to issue tenders for their deployment. India”s nationwide smart meter program, part of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), is already in progress, promoting and financing the installation of smart meters throughout the country.

IntelliSmart Infrastructure, headquartered in Gurgaon and backed by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd and the National Infrastructure Investment Fund, has an order book comprising 1.7 crore smart meters for projects in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, and Bihar. Despite the transformative potential of smart metering, Rawal notes that there is limited awareness regarding its benefits, emphasising the need for greater consumer education.

Rawal underscores that the implementation of smart metering projects will be crucial in simplifying the complexities within the distribution sector and enhancing both consumer satisfaction and the financial health of distribution companies. By digitising operations at the grassroots level, the transformation can yield positive outcomes.

One significant advantage of smart metering, , is its ability to provide data that assists distribution companies in better planning and managing their energy requirements. While the program aims to reduce inefficiencies in the distribution sector, it faces challenges such as resistance from power distribution companies concerned about losing control to third parties and government involvement. Delays in the tendering process due to limited experience with public-private partnership tenders and the need for a skilled workforce to manage smart metering cloud applications are additional hurdles.

However, IntelliSmart is positioning itself to address these challenges effectively. They believe that smart metering extends beyond efficient billing, providing relevant data for distribution companies to optimise electricity demand and management. Leveraging its strengths, IntelliSmart plans to venture into gas smart metering and water metering in the coming years.
